1. Obtain a "Superbill"
A superbill is a detailed invoice that includes all the necessary information an insurance company would require.
2. Submit the Superbill to the Insurance Company
Submit this superbill directly to your insurance company for reimbursement. The insurance company may have a specific form or process for submitting claims, which you can usually find on your insurance provider’s website.
3. Insurance Reviews the Claim
The insurance company will review the claim and determine whether it qualifies for reimbursement, depending on:
Out-of-Network benefits
The specific mental health coverage outlined in the insurance policy
Any deductibles, co-insurance, or other factors
4. Receive Reimbursement
If the claim is approved, you will receive reimbursement based on their out-of-network coverage. This is often a percentage of the session cost after any deductibles are met. For example, if the out-of-network reimbursement is 70%, and the session cost is $150, the client might be reimbursed $105.
Important Considerations:
Out-of-Network Benefits: Clients need to verify if their insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits for mental health services.
Deductibles: Reimbursement may only apply after meeting the deductible, so some clients may not receive any reimbursement until they’ve spent a certain amount out-of-pocket.
Pre-Approval: Some insurance plans may require pre-approval for mental health services.
If I use an FSA/HSA card a statement for reimbursement cannot be generated. This is illegal (double-dipping).
Some insurance companies will not consider reimbursement for services rendered by pre-licensed individuals due to state laws. This includes: interns, graduate-level therapists, and residents in counseling.
